The selection process for British Airways involves psychometric testing, which helps BA maintain a high calibre of staff by assessing candidates’ abilities. This stage of the process typically requires successful completion of one or more psychometric tests. British Airways use up to three psychometric tools; Aptitude Tests, Situational Judgement Tests and Personality Questionnaires. Different combinations of these tests are used depending on the role applied for and some of them can be completed online. Candidates are informed in advance as to which tests they will be required to take.
British Airways use (CEB) SHL for their tests. At graduate level, the function of these tests is to screen out candidates without adequate numerical and verbal ability, although higher level positions may require additional testing. This ensures that only those suited to a career with BA progress with their application.
The British Airways Process
The British Airways selection process is made up of four stages:
- Application: Applicants will be required to provide their contact details, education and work experience. This is to ensure that the candidate meets the entry requirements for their selected role. Applications are made online, allowing candidates to check the status using registered login details
- Testing: Selected candidates will then need to undertake one or more psychometric tests; which can include Numerical/Verbal/Logical Reasoning, Situational Judgement and Personality Questionnaires. The tests used are published by (CEB) SHL and have strict time limits, so practice tests are recommended.
- Interview: Candidates that are successful in the testing stage will then be asked to undertake an interview. British Airways use three types of interview; Telephone, Video and Face-to-Face. Telephone and video interviews last for approximately 30 minutes, whereas a Face-to-Face interview is likely to last about an hour. The interviews are competency based and it is recommended that you consider the STAR approach when structuring your answers.
- Assessment Centre: The final stage is at an assessment centre, in which candidates will undertake role play exercises, presentations, group exercises and case study or “work related” exercises to gauge the candidate’s ability. Successful applications at stage 4 will be given an offer of employment, or a place on one of the Student & Graduate Opportunities Programmes offered by British Airways.
British Airways Verbal Test
In these tests, candidates are provided with a passage of written information, often workplace related, and asked to analyse and draw logical inferences from that written information. The questions will be multiple choice with the answer options being: true; false; cannot say. The key here is to answer the questions based purely on the information contained within the passage (ignore any prior knowledge you may have). Think literally and go only on what you have been told in the passage.
British Airways Numerical Test
In these tests, numerical data is provided to a candidate, usually in the form of graphs, tables, statistics and financial data. To answer these questions, candidates must analyse this data and make a logical conclusion from it, allowing them to select the correct answer. Typical numerical skills which are tested include addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, ratios, fractions and percentages. Typically, these tests require the use of a calculator, although British Airways occasionally use non-calculator numerical tests for certain job roles.
British Airways Logical Test
Logical reasoning questions present a sequence of numbers or symbols and ask the candidate to select the next item in the sequence, from multiple choice options. These tests are considered non-verbal reasoning and require candidates to recognise patterns or rules and to use them to make logical conclusions as to what will come next. Logical reasoning tests have a set time limit, so it is important to work efficiently and try to answer as many questions as possible.
British Airways Situational Judgement Test
Situational judgement tests (SJT) describe fictional scenarios and provide a selection of potential actions. Throughout different sections of the test, candidates are instructed either to select the course of action they are most or least likely to adopt, the most or least effective option, to rank the options in order of effectiveness and to rate responses in terms of effectiveness and counter-productivity. SJT’s are usually required when the job applied for involves customer interaction, interpersonal sensitivity or managerial positions.
British Airways Personality Questionnaire
If required to complete a personality test, candidates are instructed do so online prior to attending a face-to-face assessment. There are no right or wrong answers, although some job roles may be more suited to certain personality types and this is taken into account alongside other information gathered during the selection process. There is no time limit for the BA personality questionnaire, although candidates will be given a deadline to complete it by. Relax and answer questions honestly, don’t try to guess preferred responses.
