BP is one of the most successful energy companies in the world, operating on a global scale with projects in over 80 countries. Due to its substantial size and multiple locations, BP have a broad list of career opportunities and graduate schemes on offer. As gaining a place on one of their graduate schemes can be extremely competitive, psychometric testing is adopted during the recruitment process, as a means of screening out candidates who lack the abilities necessary for a career in this area. Typically, candidates are asked to complete numerical, verbal and diagrammatic reasoning tests, although this may differ slightly for some positions. Candidates are informed in advance as to which tests they will be required to take.

BP reasoning tests are provided by Saville. The function of these tests is to screen out candidates without adequate numerical, verbal and diagrammatic ability, although higher level positions may require additional testing. BP’s core values consist of: Courage, Excellence, One Team, Respect and Safety.

The BP Process

The BP selection process is made of five stages:

  • Application: Applications are made online and require candidates to provide their contact details, education and work experience. This is to ensure that the candidate meets the entry requirements for their selected role. Once the application has been submitted, the candidate should be informed within two working days, as to whether they have met the necessary requirements to proceed to the next stage.
  • Testing: Successful candidates at the application stage will then need to undertake an online psychometric test; often comprised of numerical, verbal and diagrammatic reasoning questions, although this can vary depending on the scheme applied for. The test must be completed within 3 days of receiving the invitation link and will be provided by Saville Consulting. It will last approximately 30 minutes and practice tests are recommended.
  • Telephone Interview: The next stage is a telephone interview. This is competency based and is designed to assess competencies relevant to the essential aspects of the role.
  • Technical Interview: Candidates are then invited to an on site technical interview. This usually consists of two business scenarios which require the candidate to describe their actions and responses in such circumstances. Some graduate schemes may involve different tasks, for example, the BP Analyst scheme will normally require a case study presentation.
  • Assessment Centre: The final stage is attendance at an assessment centre, during which candidates will partake in both group exercises and individual exercises. These exercises will be relevant to the industry and some may be specific to the role applied for, so it is suggested that candidates prepare for this. Successful applicants at stage 5 will be offered a place on one of the Graduate schemes provided by BP.

BP Verbal Test

In these tests candidates are provided with a passage of written information, often workplace related, and asked to analyse and draw logical inferences from that written information. The questions will be multiple choice with the answer options being: true; false; cannot say. The key here is to answer the questions based purely on the information contained within the passage (ignore any prior knowledge you may have). Think literally and go only on what you have been told in the passage. These types of questions will appear in an online combined reasoning test.

BP Numerical Test

In these tests numerical data is provided to a candidate, usually in the form of graphs, tables, statistics and financial data. To answer these questions, candidates must analyse this data and make a logical conclusion from it, allowing them to select the correct answer. Typical numerical skills which are tested include addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, ratios, fractions and percentages. The BP test is a combined reasoning test and will be completed online.

BP Diagrammatic Test

In these tests candidates will need to discover the rules associated with particular symbols or diagrams (eg. rotates 90 degrees each time), and apply them by selecting the correct answer based on those rules. These questions will not be work place relevant and will appear abstract in nature. The BP Diagrammatic reasoning questions are part of an online combined reasoning test.
