Strictly speaking, psychometrics is the study of educational and psychological measurements. The word “psychometric” is used to describe any type of psychological test which provides a reliable and valid measure of human traits such as aptitude, interest, and personality:
Aptitude tests
An aptitude test can be used to help measure how people differ in their ability to carry out and perform a range of tasks.
Interest tests
An interest test is a way of measuring differing variations in people’s motivation, values and opinions, relative to their interests.
Personality tests
A personality test can be used to measure how people vary in their approach to getting things done, and in the way they interact with the wider world and the people around them.
Psychometric tests are typically used within working environments as they can help to make work-related assessments more objective. Conducting a psychometric test is very straightforward and, because they can be given to groups of people at the same time, they can also save a great deal of time (although there are some assessments which must be given individually). A psychometric test is also easy to score, so reliable results are available almost immediately.
