What’s a Psychometric Test?

Psychometric testing measures knowledge, ability and personality traits. It is widely used by recruiters, especially those hiring for graduate jobs. If you are job-seeking, it’s a competitive marketplace and you need to be familiar with this form of assessment.

This kind of testing is usually in multi-choice format, and generally timed. You can take online psychometric tests or paper-based versions. An employer may ask you to sit an online test at an early stage of the selection process.

There are various types of psychometric test, including those designed at assessing verbal and numerical ability, spatial reasoning and so on.

While psychometric testing is nothing to be afraid of, there are many things you can do to give yourself the best chances of success. Clearly you need to pay careful attention to the instructions, and ask if you are unclear on anything. You’ll also need to work as quickly and as accurately as possible. So if you get stuck, leave that particular question and return to it later if you have time, although this isn’t usually possible with online psychometric tests.

Another great thing to do is to practice the sorts of assessments most commonly used by employers. This will improve your score.
