Handling an Aptitude Test

With more job seekers applying for every vacancy, it’s increasingly difficult for employers to screen candidates.

You could therefore be asked to sit an aptitude test at any stage of the recruitment process. Sometimes online aptitude tests are even sent out with the recruitment packs.

Both paper and online aptitude tests are designed to assess your motivation, interests, values and behaviour.

Often there are no right or wrong answers, and decisions are rarely made based on candidates’ test scores alone. Other factors like interview performance are important too.

Aptitude tests may be general or specific. If you are going for a job in IT, for example, your technical skills may be tested. If you are applying for a job in a customer service department or call centre, you may need to complete a data entry assessment.

Try to find out what to expect in advance, and tell the organisation of any difficulties such as dyslexia or poor hearing.

Think about what qualities the organisation is looking for, and try to demonstrate them. This should give you an insight into the sort of question to expect.

Don’t worry if you don’t finish in the time given. You are not always expected to complete everything. But always do the practice questions at the beginning of the test.
